Having health insurance is important for every human being. The U.S. government, through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), mandates the people to have any insurance among the many types available. To choose the right one for you, learn more about the different types of insurance below. Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
With this health plan, you will be able to choose your preferred doctors or hospitals who have agreed to charge less for their services, within the network. You will not need any referral to do any procedure or to visit any specialist. If you wish to see a physician outside the plan's network, then you will have to pay for additional charges. Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) HMO is the cheapest choice of all the policies, but it provides the least freedom in your choice of health care providers. You will have to stay in-network to get coverage. If you get this plan, you will be required to choose a primary care physician (PCP), and you will need to obtain referrals to do procedures and to see a specialist. Point-of-service (POS) plans Features from both HMO and PPO plans are merged to create this type of insurance. Just like HMOs, you will have to choose a PCP from the list provided and still have to obtain referrals. However, you can opt to use health services from doctors and hospitals out of the network, but that will incur extra expenses. Exclusive Provider Organization (EPOs) Health Insurance Plans EPOs have a network of physicians from which members are required to seek treatment. You will not be able to get services from outside the network except for emergencies. You also do not need to get referrals for this plan. Indemnity Health Insurance Plans This plan is also known as a fee-for-service plan. The insurance company usually pays for 80% or more of the cost while the remaining amount is paid by the member. Choosing this plan will allow you to choose your preferred healthcare provider. Before choosing an insurance plan, you have to think it over carefully because the type you obtain will dictate your whole treatment and the amount you have to pay for. You have to compare the different plans by looking at their network of providers and the benefits you can get from each.
