What is Open Enrollment in Colorado?

​Open enrollment in Colorado is the window of time when people can enroll in a new health insurance plan. Here in Colorado in 2016, the Open Enrollment Period is November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2016. ​

​Important Dates for Colorado Open Enrollment in 2016:

• November 1, 2015: Open Enrollment begins - This is the first day you can enroll in an insurance plan for 2016 from the Health Insurance Marketplace. Your coverage can begin as soon as January 1st 2016. 
• December 15, 2015: This is the last day to enroll in a plan for new coverage (or change your plan) for health insurance coverage that begins on January 1st.
• January 1, 2016: For anyone who enrolled prior to December 15th in 2015, your new coverage begins.
• January 15, 2016: This is the last opportunity to enroll in or change your plans for new health insurance coverage that starts on February 1st, 2016.
• January 31, 2016: Open Enrollment for 2016 ends. New enrollments or changes that were made between January 16th and January31sts will take effect on March 1st.

You can apply for Medicaid or Childrens Health Insurance Coverage at any time of the year.

If you don’t enroll in a health insurance plan for 2016 before January 31, 2016, you won't be able to enroll in any health insurance plan for the entire year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

What is a Special Enrollment Period?

A special enrollment period is a time outside the standard open enrollment period when you and your family have the right to sign up for new health coverage. 

This generally occurs in the 60 days after a change in family status like marriage or childbirth or the loss of other health insurance coverage. If you start working for a new employer, a job based plan provides a special enrollment period of 30 days.
