Why Reducing Hospital Bills is a Good Idea even when you have Health Insurance

While health insurance can make it easier for you to get health care, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can afford the hospital bills. Some people may avoid medical care because of high deductibles and copayments just to save money. But regular health care is important, and sacrificing it doesn’t have to be an option. By strategically planning your health care, you may be able to avoid that dilemma.
If you worry about your future health expenses, these tips might help:

Get the right plan.

Saving on health care expenses starts with choosing the right health plan.  Consider health insurance costs, but don’t choose a plan based on this factor alone. Instead, carefully evaluate your options and health needs.

Health insurance plans with lower premiums for high deductibles may be wise for those who require only a few medical needs. For those who have chronic diseases,  on the other hand, higher premiums and lower deductible plan may be best as they would visit the doctor more often.

Visit in-network providers only.

Health insurance plans typically have a network of doctors and healthcare facilities that offer lower rates for policyholders. In-network providers will give you more coverage than out-of-network providers. Ask your agent about the doctors that are under your plan’s network.

Negotiate high medical bills.

You don’t need to accept the balance as the final amount due when you receive your hospital bill. Contact the billing office and ask for ways to reduce the cost. If they don't offer to reduce your bill after all your efforts, ask if you can speak with the supervisor. Inquire if a monthly payment plan can be made to make your bill more manageable. Many providers will also offer discounts if you pay with cash.

Know the coverage under free preventative care.

The Affordable Care Act states that insured Americans are allowed to have certain preventative screenings and services for free. These include screenings and immunizations for specific types of cancer. If you take advantage of this benefit, you can save money and stay healthy.

Find ways to save on prescription medications.

If you already have maintenance medications, they can be a large part of your expenses if you don’t find ways to save on them. Save on your drug costs by:
  • Asking drug samples from your doctors
  • Asking for alternatives when your doctor recommends a branded medicine with no generic equivalent available
  • Choosing generic medications over brand names if possible
  • Getting drugs in larger doses and splitting them
  • Refilling your pill bottle for several months at a time
  • Visiting the website of the drug manufacturer for coupons or assistance programs

There may be instances when you realize that your current plan is no longer working for you. Carry this lesson for the next year and make sure you learn from experience. Choose a health plan that would best suit your needs during the next open enrollment period. Don’t hesitate to talk to your agents and ask for advice on the best plans for you.
